Lao Parliament Begins Debating Economic Issues: An Overview

The Lao National Assembly's ninth legislature commenced its fifth ordinary session on Monday, signaling the initiation of discussions among parliament members regarding crucial economic matters.

Reviewing Socio-Economic Development and Financial Plans- During this session, lawmakers will engage in comprehensive deliberations, evaluations, and decision-making processes concerning various reports. These reports pertain to the progress achieved in the implementation of the ongoing socio-economic development plan, the state budget plan, the monetary plan, and two national agendas addressing economic and financial challenges. Additionally, the parliament will examine the accomplishments made in combating drug-related issues during the first half of 2023, along with the objectives set for the subsequent six months.

The Lao government aims to utilize this assembly as an opportunity to provide detailed briefings to the National Assembly members. These briefings will cover important topics such as the draft 10-year national strategy for mineral development spanning from 2021 to 2030. Furthermore, the government will present updates on the implementation of the social protection strategy and the national strategy for water and water resources management by 2030. 

New Laws and Amendments Under Consideration- Among the significant matters to be discussed, the adoption of four new laws holds substantial importance. These include the Law on Health Affairs, Employment, Land Tax, and Lao Young Pioneers. Additionally, lawmakers will consider proposed amendments to six existing laws, namely the Law on Commercial Banks, Aquatic Animals and Fisheries, Wildlife, Printing and Distribution, Protection of the Rights and Interests of Children, and Military Court. This legislative agenda demonstrates the commitment of the Lao National Assembly to address emerging issues and enhance existing legal frameworks.

The fifth ordinary session of the Lao National Assembly is scheduled to continue until July 18, allowing ample time for comprehensive discussions, evaluations, and decision-making processes regarding the aforementioned economic matters.
