I was clear about my future', says Tabassum, a Muslim student who topped the Karnataka Board exams.
In fact, the Karnataka government had banned wearing hijab in the school, and after this order of the government, there was a lot of uproar. Actually, the government had ordered that all the children come to school only in uniform so that equality can be seen in all. But, in protest against this government decision, many Muslim girls stopped going to school, and their studies stopped. Even some murders took place regarding this matter. The matter reached the Supreme Court. Although Tabassum chose education over religion, she started going to school. As a result, Tabassum, a student at Nagaratnamma Meda Kasturiranga Shetty National School (NMKRV), has topped the board exams. Tabassum secured the highest marks in the second PUC exam conducted by the Karnataka Pre-University Education Department. Tabassum has secured 593 marks out of 600.
Earlier, Tabassum also used to go to class wearing a hijab. However, after the decision of the government and the Karnataka High Court, she gave priority to education over the hijab. There was a lot of uproar after the hijab ban in the PUC across Karnataka. Politics also took place in this matter. Recalling that time, Topper Tabassum said that she became very worried. There was an uproar in the school. There was a fear that anarchy might arise. Six girl students of a government school in Udupi claimed that they were not allowed to attend class because they were wearing hijabs. Within no time, protests spread across the state. Tabassum said that in the fight between education and hijab, I chose education. Now she goes to school wearing a hijab but takes it off in class and studies like other students. Her family members are also very happy with Tabassum's achievement.
