Lebanese PM unveils master plan for Beirut port reconstruction

BEIRUT: Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced on Friday the implementation of a master plan for the rehabilitation of Beirut Port, which was destroyed by two explosions in August 2020.

According to a statement from the Council of Ministers, the rebuilding of the Beirut port remains a national and economic priority for Lebanon, especially because the port is the most important artery in the Mediterranean, Mikati said during a ceremony attended by World Bank representatives in the capital Beirut.

According to sources, he stated that the government is creating a new law for the development of ports, especially the Beirut port, in order to attract corporations interested in investing in them.

According to Ali Hamieh, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation in Lebanon, the new legal framework, which is being developed in collaboration with the World Bank, intends to stimulate investment in all public facilities.

The new law, according to World Bank Regional Director Saroj Kumar Jha, establishes the governance principles for the rehabilitation of the Beirut port.On August 4, 2020, two massive explosions shook the Beirut port, causing extensive damage to its facilities and killing over 200 people.
