In a new edition, Rolls-Royce has unveiled a bespoke Wraith Eagle VIII edition of its flagship grand tourer. The limited edition vehicle has been created to commemorate the a legendary feat achieved 100 years ago, when Captain John Alcock and Lt. Arthur Brown made the first nonstop transatlantic flight in June 1919. For this flight, they modified a Vickers Vimy Bomber aircraft that was used in first World War and fitted it with a 20.3-litre, 350 bhp, Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engine, hence the name-- Wraith Eagle VIII. This engine by Rolls-Royce propelled the bi-plane to a maximum speed of 185.05 km/h and flew for hours through dense clouds and freezing fog.

It is to be noted that commenting on the Rolls-Royce Wraith Eagle VIII, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, “Wraith Eagle VIII is at once an object of desire; an homage to heroes and a protagonist to today’s visionaries. This Rolls-Royce Collection demonstrates the extraordinary skill of our Bespoke Collective at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex. Bespoke remains the jewel in the crown of the marque, creating luxury items that defy the trend of mass luxury manufacturers using ‘tick-box’ options to answer customer demand.” The Rolls-Royce Wraith Eagle VIII sports several cosmetic additions to pay homage to the legendary feat. The exterior of the car is done in a gunmetal with Selby grey two-tone paint and get a black grille with vanes to allude to the cowling of the engine on the aircraft.
To be noted that on the inside, the highlight has to be the starlight headliner showing night sky lit up with stars, the flight path and the constellations. Other design elements that emulate the journey include the clock on the dashboard, which gets iced background that glows a faint green at night. The driver-side door includes a brass plaque with Winston Churchill's quote commending the pilots for their achievement. Besides this, there has been heavy usage of brass elements on the inside to remind one of the inside of the Vickers Vimy aircraft. Also, Rolls-Royce has decided to make only fifty units of the Wraith Eagle VIII editions to adorn the garage of discerning collectors.
