The jersey worn by one of the world's best football players, Diego Maradona, in his 1986 World Cup quarter-final match against England, has become the highest-paid sporting item at auction. The auction that ended on Wednesday fetched Rs 67.58 crore (£7.1 million) for this jersey.

This match is known for the controversial 'Hand of God' goal. In this match, Maradona wanted to score with a header but the ball reportedly hit his hand and went into the goal post and the match referee failed to see it. However, according to his fame in this match, he scored almost the entire team of England with his superb dribbling, scoring goals and giving the team a memorable victory.

Auctioneer Sotheby's said on Wednesday that a record £7.1 million bid has already been placed for Maradona's jersey. However, he has not given any information about its buyer so far. The match, played in Mexico City on 22 June 1986, assumed even greater significance as the conflict between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands had begun four years earlier.

Maradona later said that the goal was 'with a mixture of Maradona's head and the hand of God. His second goal of the match was voted the 'best goal of the century' by FIFA in 2002. After winning this match 2-1, Argentina has also made it the champion by winning the semi-finals and final. After this match, Maradona swapped jerseys with England midfielder Steve Hodge. He had never sold it until now. It has been on loan for the past 20 years to the National Football Museum of England in Manchester.
