KOZHIKODE: The literary world mourns the passing of renowned Malayalam author P Valsala, who breathed her last on Tuesday night in Kozhikode. Succumbing to a sudden cardiac arrest during her medical treatment at a private hospital, Valsala left behind a legacy that enriched Malayalam literature.

A luminary in the literary sphere, Valsala, former president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi, carved her niche with iconic novels such as ‘Nellu’ and ‘Nizhalurangunna Vazhikal’. The publication of ‘Nellu’ in 1972 not only marked a milestone in her career but also garnered immense popularity, later adapted into a movie by filmmaker Ramu Kariat just two years after its release. Her exceptional talent earned her the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1975 for ‘Nizhalurangunna Vazhikal’. Recognizing her exceptional contributions, she was honored with the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary accolade bestowed by the Kerala government, in 2021.

Throughout her illustrious career, Valsala penned over 20 novels, approximately 300 short stories, children’s literature, and engaging travelogues. Beginning her professional journey as an educator, she culminated her career in 1993 as the principal of Government Teachers’ Training College in Kozhikode.

Notably, despite being a native of Kozhikode, Valsala held a profound connection with Wayanad. Her works, notably ‘Nellu’ and ‘Koomankolli’, delved into the lives of tribal women and environmental exploitation, exploring uncharted territories in literature. Her dedication to portraying the untold stories earned her the moniker 'Writer of Thirunelli', reflecting her deep understanding and portrayal of the region.

The passing of P Valsala is not just a loss to the literary community but also a poignant moment for those who cherished her profound insights and captivating narratives. Her legacy will continue to resonate through the pages of her works, inspiring generations to come.
