NEW DELHI: Esteemed scholar and connoisseur of art, B.N. Goswamy, passed away at the age of 90. The renowned art historian and writer breathed his last at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on Friday.

According to Neelam Man Singh, a close family friend and theater artist, Mr. Goswamy had been battling a lung infection. "It wasn't an extended illness. He had been experiencing breathing difficulties for the past month, but that was the extent of it," she stated.

Born on August 15, 1933, B.N. Goswamy, a recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, was most celebrated for his extensive contributions to the understanding of Pahari style paintings.

Affectionately referred to as BNG within art circles, Mr. Goswamy authored over 26 books delving into various facets of art, including Pahari and miniature paintings, court painters, and Indian painting masters.

Neelam Man Singh fondly reminisced about the late professor of Art History at Panjab University, describing him as "eloquent" and an "attentive listener." "He was my art history teacher. His wife was like an elder sister to me. His gentle demeanor and his keen listening skills left a deep impression on me. I was truly captivated by the realm of art history. He was remarkably articulate, providing us with insights into the intricacies of miniature paintings and the workings of modernism," she shared.

Mr. Goswamy's wife, Karuna, who was also an art historian, passed away in 2020. He is survived by his daughter, Malavika.
