#OperationVijay: As India marks the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, the nation pauses to remember and celebrate the heroes who bravely defended its borders during the 1999 Kargil War. This day commemorates the significant victory over Pakistan and pays tribute to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve India's territorial integrity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Drass, Ladakh, to honor the valor and dedication of these heroes.

Here is a look at some of the most courageous figures of 'Operation Vijay':

1. Captain Vikram Batra
Captain Vikram Batra, serving with the 13th Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, was a pivotal figure in the Kargil War. His mission to reclaim the Tololing Ridge, specifically Point 5140, saw him engaging in intense combat. Tragically, on July 26, 1999, while attempting to rescue an injured comrade, Captain Batra was killed. His bravery earned him the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award. The peak where he fell is now known as 'Batra Top.'

2. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav
Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, from the 18 Grenadiers, led a daring assault on Tiger Hill, which was crucial for the success of the mission. Climbing a steep cliff, Yadav and his platoon faced fierce enemy resistance. His heroic actions on July 4, 1999, were recognized with the Param Vir Chakra, awarded for his extraordinary bravery.

3. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, also from the 13th Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, was instrumental in capturing Area Flat Top, a strategic position held by enemy forces. Despite severe injuries, Kumar's courage inspired his team to overcome the enemy bunkers. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his exceptional valor.

4. Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey
Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey of the 1st Battalion, Gorkha Rifles, led several successful attacks against intruders in the Batalik sector. His strategic leadership resulted in the capture of Jaubar Top and Khalubar. Pandey's leadership and sacrifice, which culminated in his death on the battlefield, were honored with the Param Vir Chakra.

5. Colonel Sonam Wangchuk
Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, then a Major in the Ladakh Scouts regiment, played a crucial role in operations on Chorbat La Top. His leadership and tactical expertise in the Kargil War earned him the Maha Vir Chakra.

6. Captain Anuj Nayyar
Captain Anuj Nayyar of the 17th Battalion, Jat Regiment, was martyred while fighting at Tiger Hill on July 7, 1999. His bravery in combat was posthumously recognized with the Maha Vir Chakra.

7. Major Padmapani Acharya
Major Padmapani Acharya of the 2nd Battalion, Rajputana Rifles, was killed at Lone Hill on June 28, 1999. His valiant efforts, despite severe injuries, were honored with the Maha Vir Chakra.

8. Captain N. Kenguruse
Captain N. Kenguruse of the 2nd Battalion, Rajputana Rifles, was martyred at Lone Hill, Drass Sector, on June 28, 1999. His gallantry was recognized posthumously with the Maha Vir Chakra.

9. Major Vivek Gupta
Major Vivek Gupta of the 2nd Battalion, Rajputana Rifles, died on June 12, 1999, after capturing key posts in the Drass sector. His heroism was honored with the Maha Vir Chakra.

10. Lieutenant Keishing Clifford Nongrum
Lieutenant Keishing Clifford Nongrum of the 12th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, was killed on July 1, 1999, while capturing Point 4812. He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery.

11. Naik Digendra Kumar
Naik Digendra Kumar of the 2nd Battalion, Rajputana Rifles, exhibited outstanding heroism during the Kargil War. He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra on August 15, 1999, for his valor in battle.
