KOLKATA: The world of economics mourns the loss of renowned economist, Professor Nirmala Banerjee, who peacefully died at a private medical facility in Kolkata at the age of 87.
Professor Nirmala Banerjee, the mother of Nobel Laureate Indian economist Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, breathed her last just hours after her son's arrival in the city earlier that morning.
The eminent economist had been grappling with age-related health issues for an extended period. Her condition took a critical turn on Thursday, prompting a hospital visit from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep sorrow at the passing of Prof. Nirmala Banerjee, acknowledging her as a renowned economist and the mother of Nobel Laureate Prof. Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee. She shared her heartfelt sentiments in a statement, saying, "Deeply saddened at the demise of Prof Nirmala Banerjee, renowned economist, and mother of Nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee. She breathed her last today at Kolkata. I visited her at the hospital yesterday. I came to know Nirmaladi well and have many sweet memories now. Her demise is a great loss in our public life."
A graduate of economics from the London School of Economics, Professor Nirmala Banerjee served as a professor at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata.
Her husband, Dipak Banerjee, also a Nobel laureate in Economics, and a PhD graduate from the London School, was a professor at the iconic Presidency College in Kolkata.
