USA: Google has introduced a new feature called "smart chips" that allows users to embed third-party apps into Google Docs. This feature is now available to both Google Workspace users and those with personal Google accounts. It is part of Google's "smart canvas" redesign of its office suite.

With smart chips, users can add, view, and interact with important data from third-party apps directly within Google Docs. This feature was initially announced last year and is now accessible to the general public. Collaborators can easily check the status of work from various sources thanks to integrations with apps like Atlassian and Figma.

To use third-party smart chips, administrators or users need to install the partner's add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace. They then grab a share link from the third-party source and paste it into the document, followed by pressing the "tab" key. This action will insert a smart chip into the document, allowing individuals to preview the app's information and work status.

It's important to note that administrators can create and use third-party smart chips only if the developer has enabled it for their application. Additionally, users need to ensure that their admin has installed or allowed specific add-ons for third-party applications.

Developers have control over how the smart chips are implemented. For example, Figma allows users to pull interactive previews of Figma/FigJam files into Google Docs. Once the integration is set up, hovering over the link will display a preview image of the project, along with information about its creator and the last update.

Now, the ability to embed third-party smart chips is available to all Google Workspace customers and individuals with personal Google accounts. Previously, it was limited to select users.
