Kolkata: Public life is being affected due to the complete lockdown imposed on Friday to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in West Bengal. During this period, apart from necessary services, all offices and business establishments are closed. Public vehicles are also missing from the roads. According to official reports, except for some places like Purulia city, Asansol and Durgapur in Kolkata, all districts imposed lockdown.

In these districts, some vegetable shops were open before the police arrived in the morning. There was silence in every part of the city including Raja Bazar, Gariahat, Bazaar Crossing, Hudco Crossing Ultadanga. Police have also put blockers on the roads to keep an eye on the movement of vehicles. Police have also detained those who violate the rules in some areas. Earlier on September 7, the lockdown was imposed.

Keeping in mind the interest of students in view of NEET exam, the decision to implement the complete lockdown was withdrawn on Thursday, 12 September. As of Thursday, 1,93,175 cases of corona infection were reported in Kolkata.

SFI, the student unit of Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M), had appealed to the West Bengal government to lift the lockdown. Prateek Rehman, President of the State Unit of Students Federation of India (SFI), said in a statement on Wednesday that due to the lockdown, the candidates will have to face difficulty in reaching exam centres for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on 13th September.
