HYDERABAD:  Three people reportedly died after being struck by lightning in vaious parts of Telangana as heavy rain lashed parts of the state, including Hyderabad, harming the normal life out of gear.

Late on Monday, reports of lightning-related fatalities came from the districts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Hanamkonda. In the district of Bhadradri Kothagudem, a farmer named L. Sreenu who was returning home from his fields, died when lightning struck him.

In the Khammam district, lightning claimed the life of Sheikh Jaan Bi, a homemaker who was seated in her home's courtyard. In the third case, a guy who was sitting under a tree in the Hanamkonda district died from a thunderbolt.
On Monday evening, areas of the state, including the state capital Hyderabad, experienced heavy rain. Hyderabad had a torrential downpour that flooded highways and low-lying regions, paralysing daily activity for a few hours.

In barely three hours, rainfall ranged from 9.1 to 12.7 cm in some areas of Hyderabad. Hyderabad has not had rainfall this high in September for more than ten years. 11.25 cm of rain fell in the city's Mehdipatnam neighbourhood up to midnight. On September 6, 2017, the 9 cm of rain that fell in 24 hours was the greatest amount ever.

In some areas of the city, drains were overflowing and flooding roads. Long traffic jams were visible on the main roads. Due to traffic jams at practically all major traffic intersections, people who were driving home from offices and other places of employment became stranded.

For several hours, Motorists were caught in traffic jams. Many residents reached their homes after midnight. In certain places, the supply of electricity was also interrupted.

In some colonies, overflowing lakes and tanks allowed rainwater into the homes. Huge flooding was experienced in places like Asif Nagar, Gudimalkapur, Malaket, and Musheerabad. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Disaster Response Force (DRF) troops were deployed to remove waterlogging.

The state is expected to see rain over the next four days, Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has predicted. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana, it said.
