After dozens of titles, thousands of goals and countless records, Lionel Messi's illustrious career with Barcelona Football Club may come to an abrupt end. The case is also being feared to be caught in the legal odds. On Tuesday, Messi told Barcelona that he was leaving the club with which he has been associated for nearly two decades. He was not happy with not getting a title this season and losing to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Barcelona has confirmed to the Associated Press that Lionel Messi has sent 1 document to the club, in which he wishes to leave the club. However, the club has indicated that the case may reach the court and said that it will not allow the Argentine veteran to leave the club on his own free will. Barcelona has told Messi that the club wants to keep him with it and has expressed its wish to get retired while staying at the club.

The main issue is the provision attached to Messi's contract. Barcelona said that the documents sent by Messi mention a provision that gives him permission to leave the club without any problems. However, the club has said that the time period of this provision was over in June and legal advice will have to be taken for this. Messi's contract also included a provision of seven hundred million euros ($ 826 million).
