The Puducherry government has increased the prices of all types of liquor by 20 per cent. The excise department announced this on Wednesday saying the new prices will come into effect from July 15. However, the price of liquor in Puducherry will still remain lower than in neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other states.

The same Puducherry administration cancelled a 7.5 per cent special covid levy on liquor in April this year, reducing the prices of liquor in the Union Territory. The excise department's proposal to abolish the validity of special excise duty from April 7 was approved by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Sundararajan, after which liquor became cheaper in the Union Territory.

The additional fee was in May last year to bring prices according to neighbouring states to prevent the arrival of persons, especially from Tamil Nadu to Puducherry, due to the corona epidemic. The Lieutenant Governor had suspended special duty and ordered all pubs, retailers and restaurants to follow safety protocols. According to a press release from the Lieutenant Governor's Office, it was withdrawn after obtaining permission from the Election Commission. Puducherry, on the other hand, has reported 121 new corona cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of infected to 1.19 lakh.
