New Delhi: The Privileges Committee of the Lok Sabha is scheduled to convene next week to address the suspension of three Congress members during the Winter Session for their disruptive conduct. The committee, led by BJP member Sunil Kumar Singh, will conduct a meeting on January 12 to gather oral evidence from the suspended Congress members—K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque, and Vijayakumar Vijay Vasanth. These members faced suspension for allegedly causing "grave disorder in the House" on December 18.

In the context of the Winter Session of Parliament, 100 Lok Sabha members from the opposition were suspended due to their unruly behavior, which involved displaying placards and chanting slogans, demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the breach of Parliament security. While 97 members received suspensions for the remainder of the Winter Session, the cases of Jayakumar, Khaleque, and Vijayakumar, who approached the presiding officer's chair, were referred to the Privileges Committee.

The suspension of these three members will persist until the committee submits its report to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Additionally, in the Rajya Sabha, 46 members faced suspension during the Winter Session, including 11 members whose cases were referred to the Privileges Committee of the Upper House, chaired by Deputy Chairman Harivansh. However, the committee is yet to schedule a meeting to examine the suspension cases of the 11 members in the Rajya Sabha. Opposition members who were suspended include Jebi Mather Hisham, L Hanumanthaiah, Neeraj Dangi, Rajmani Patel, Kumar Ketkar, G C Chandrashekhar (all Congress), Binoy Viswam and Sandosh Kumar P (both CPI), M Mohamed Abdulla (DMK), John Brittas, and AA Rahim (both CPI-M). They face suspension until the House "has the benefit of the Report of the Committee of Privilege."
