Loneliness is a common emotion when someone feels alone, separated from others or unsupported and distressed. But loneliness that becomes persistent causes accelerated aging with multiple health consequences, including conditions that lead to death.
You eat less and eat unhealthy foods. When you are single or lonely, especially widowed men and women who are 50 and above, tend to eat fewer vegetables than those who are married or living together. When you cook for other, you make more healthier meals that contains varied foods such as meat, starch, vegetables, etc.
Loneliness is one of the major causes of mental diseases and the sense of isolation can have a similar effect on the brain that is noted when an individual experiences physical pain. The sense of belonging to a group or community is important not only for companionship, but also for survival. The level of the stress hormone cortisol shoots up abnormally high in the morning and is never at normal levels all through the day.
Individuals who are lonely or live alone have a 24% increased risk of dying of heart disease. This is because they have no social life or support. They are more susceptible to the effects of stress which increases the risk of heart diseases. elevated stress hormones increase the accumulation of cholesterol deposits in the heart.
Chronic loneliness can mingle with normal brain functions and increase the risk of neurodegenerative disorders like Dementia. It has been seen that those living alone or staying in nursing homes and old age institutions have greater chances of developing dementia than those staying with their families.
