Lyle Jeff is a former bishop of a polygamist Mormon denomination called the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jeff is also the brother of former FLDS leader Warren Jeffs, who was convicted of sexual assault of a minor in 2011. Jeff spent a year as a fugitive from the FBI after Utah prosecutors accused him and 11 other FLDS members of scamming the government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
He was given a five-year prison sentence after being caught again. Jeff was described as having a day-to-day operation after Warren went to prison. According to the Utah newspaper, Dassenet, he is listed as Warren and a church bishop in some special documents. Downey Barlow, described by High Country News as an associate of Loyal Jeffs, testified against Jeff. According to Barlow, Jeff ordered him to "reassign" the children of the men expelled from the church, which Barlow said he was uncomfortable doing. After Barlow left, he said that members of the FLDS had threatened his wife Cheryl to return to the FLDS and that Jeff would come after him. Deseret reported that like his brother Warren, Lyle was also expected to "meet the spiritual and physical needs of church members."
At Jeff's sentence, his lawyer, Catherine Nestor, stated that he had not come to see him from the family and that there was no money in his commitment account. However, Jeff's son Thomas stood in the dock during his father's sentence and reportedly said his father would use his prison time to think about things".
