New Delhi:- Last year, Jonas Heineman was in charge of a group of people who were putting in many places to charge electric cars. Heineman's wife was expecting their first baby. Heineman was very busy with work and family. He didn't want to spend his free time managing a construction project at his home. Even though he and his wife were talking about fixing up their old bathrooms, he knew he wasn't good at designing things. I didn't want to go and find materials.

Then he found out about a company in San Francisco called Made Renovation that said it could make bathroom renovations easy. He really wanted the help that they promised, and he was excited to find them. However, his excitement would quickly be extinguished.

Established in 2019, Made Renovation promises customers that it can turn their old-fashioned bathrooms into eye-catching spaces within a few months, all at a reasonable cost. HowBy giving them the option to pick from many different templates, and then pairing them with project managers from our company who will assist with necessary permits, assign contractors, order the materials needed, and provide updates and support online until the renovation is finished.

Made Renovation was able to get a lot of money from investors because they had a good plan. They got $31 million from investors like Felicis, Founders Fund, Insight Partners, and Jessica Alba who liked their use of technology. A simple and very liked style also makes a difference. Made Renovation has a stylish website that lets you take virtual tours of twelve beautiful bathrooms. Each bathroom has shiny tiles, modern fixtures, and vanities that look like they belong in a magazine.

The company's hard work has brought in customers and positive media attention. In 2021, Made Renovation was doing well in its second year. Architectural Digest said it could become the biggest bathroom remodeler because of its helpful digital tools for managing projects, creating designs, and setting prices.

Technology has its limits, and Made Renovation's claims of easy bathroom renovations are causing problems because construction can be complicated, making some of their projects difficult and not hassle-free. Heineman says that from his own experience, it was not a serious matter, but rather a joke.

Heineman was promised project management by Made Renovation, but they later got rid of their project management team without telling him. They claimed it was a good thing for customers because it would save money. The company later sent Heineman a guidebook for managing construction projects. He found it helpful but not relevant to why he chose Made Renovation initially.

Mistakes, delays, forgotten things, and exceeding budgets were quite common, based on the emails we saw. One problem was about a toilet that arrived eight months late. Heineman also received broken fixtures that he found difficult to return. He also lost the first contractor that was sent by Made Renovation because that person didn't want to do the job for the agreed price.

Heineman isn't holding him responsible; he believes Made Renovation is to blame. "That's why they end up with these below-average contractors," he says. "The only individuals who are willing to accept these jobs at a reduced price lack the ability to generate new business opportunities and are ineffective at communicating with customers. "

Heineman is not the only person who feels like he was promised something that disappeared when he became a customer of Made Renovation. Airbnb worker Deanna Bjorkquist says that she was also suddenly left to handle her bathroom project on her own when she encountered problems with obtaining permits, facing unexpected construction difficulties, and figuring out where to store materials. For instance, Made Renovation didn't start renovating her bathroom until six months after she agreed to a contract with the company in October. During that time, she had a new toilet sitting in her living room.

She says the person in charge of her project refused to completely demolish her old bathroom. They only took apart the top part and didn't continue until she hired and paid another company to finish the work.

According to Bjorkquist, there were additional issues like payments not being given to the workers who were renovating her bathroom, just like what happened with Heineman. She believes one of the reasons for the problem is that the contractor she hired for her home used a subcontractor, just like Heineman. Additionally, she mentioned that she chose to use financing provided by Made Renovation through a third party. However, this offer was initially taken back and then given back again. This caused a lot of stress for her and she was told that her credit could be negatively affected.

As of last month, her bathroom (shown on the right side) was not finished yet.

Honesty, Made Renovation is entering an industry where very few customers end up completely happy, regardless of who is involved. Additionally, the timing for it is very bad. In February 2020, the company opened its first store in a popular shopping area in San Francisco. The store allows customers to see and explore their design ideas. About a month before the pandemic, most of the United States was affected. to close or turn off.

CEO Roger Dickey was asked many times to talk about the complaints from his customers, but he chose not to answer. Investors don't have much to say, either. → Investors also have very little to say. Felicis Partner Sundeep Peechu recently said in an email that they are a small investor but have limited knowledge because they are not on the board and don't receive updates. A question sent to Nikhil Sachdev, who led Made Renovation's $23 million investment in 2021, has not been answered. Felicis includes Made Renovation on their website, but it is not listed on the websites of Insight Partners or Founders Fund.

Made Renovation isn't alone in the wake of the nation's housing boom that ended last year, when interest rates began to rise rapidly. Although most of the startups are marketplace companies that connect designers and contractors with clients, another company emerged around the same time as Made Renovation – with similar promises of Bathroom renovation just got easier and more affordable – is Block Renovation. The Brooklyn-based company raised $104 million in a series of quick funding rounds between 2018 and 2021. Since then, Block has expanded into kitchen renovations.

The two have pursued what is expected to become an $80 billion market by 2027. But Made Renovation is unlikely to capture that much market share if customer complaints continue to pile up.
