BHOPAL: MP state administration has planned a weeklong celebration to commemorate the state's 67th foundation day, which occurred on November 1, 1956.

It's interesting to note that the state was split in half on the same day in 2000, creating a new state called Chhattisgarh. Even though the Central Provinces Legislative Council was established in 1913, the current Madhya Pradesh was first created on November 1, 1956, as a result of the reorganisation of states. The former four states of Mahakaushal, Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal were combined to form it.

The Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha originally had 288 seats, which was then increased to 321 seats (including one nominated member), which was eventually decreased to 230 seats in 2000 (following the split of Chhattisgarh). There used to be a nominated member in addition to the 230 members who are directly elected by the state's citizens; however, the nomination system was eliminated in 2003.
The Madhya Pradesh Assembly had 231 members as of 2003 since, under the parliamentary system, there was also a nominated member in addition to the 230 elected members. Although it used to be the government's representative, the nomination procedure for members was terminated, according to state Assembly speaker Girish Gautam.
Up to 15 Assembly elections have been held in the previous 66 years, with the most recent one taking place in 2018. The 16th Assembly elections are slated to take place in November and December of 2023. With the exception of a brief period when Govind Narayan Singh's Sanyukta Vidhayak Dal was in power, the state was primarily governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress (rebel of the Congress and later merged with the party again).

Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the longest-serving Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh, which has had 18 Chief Ministers since it was founded, some of them twice. The BJP reigned for more than 17 years after 2003, and the current Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, maintained the position for more than 15 of those years.

The final elections of 2018 were won by Congress. But after Jyotiraditya Scindia and 20 other MLAs joined the BJP, it disintegrated within 18 months, and the saffron party swept back into power in 2020.

Speaker Girish Gautam continued by stating that due to the size of the state, the people living in distant locations were cut off from government programmes.

"The demand for the creation of Chhattisgarh was present even before 2000, and the Centre made a wise choice. As a result, both states have since experienced remarkable growth," he said.
