CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Tamil Nadu government to give former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University (AU) M.K. Surappa, a copy of Justice Kalayiarasan's inquiry report so that his explanation could be included in the proceedings. The report will be sent to the Governor of Tamil Nadu, who also serves as the University's chancellor.

On the basis of a plea filed by the previous Vice-Chancellor, Justice V. Parthiban of the Madras High Court issued the instructions.

"However, in light of certain unfavourable findings in the report, the petitioner's explanation and version must be part of the inquiry processes as his vindication," the judge noted while handing the judgement. The judge further stated that the government cannot claim ignorance of the law or refuse to release a copy of the report.

Surappa's tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu's leading educational institution came to an end in 2021, and he has been fighting a judicial struggle since the previous AIADMK government launched an investigation into him for suspected corruption, maladministration, and irregularities in appointments. Surappa, on the other hand, claimed that he was victimised because of his opposition to then-Minister of Higher Education K.P. Anbalagan's theft of funds and materials.
