Chennai: The Madras High Court on Monday condemned the Election Commission. The court described the commission as the "most irresponsible institution" for the alleged spread of the second wave of coronavirus in the country. In its remarks, the court said that election commission officials should also be booked on charges of murder.

A bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Rammurthy observed a PIL. The petition sought directions to the authorities to ensure fair counting of votes in Karur on May 2 by taking effective steps for corona guidelines and making proper arrangements. Since about 77 candidates are contesting in Karur constituency, it will be very difficult to accommodate their agents in the counting hall. The petitioners alleged that it could affect compliance with the protocol.

When the Election Commission counsel told the judges that all necessary steps had been taken, the bench said that allowing political parties to hold rallies and meetings, it paved the way for the revival of the second wave of corona. The judges have verbally warned that they will not hesitate to stop the counting on May 2.
