Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the number of madrassas in the state will be reduced. CM Sarma said that he wants to provide general education in madrasas. That's why they will be registered. CM Sarma has further said that 'We want to reduce the number of madrasas in the state in the first phase. We want that general education should be imparted in madrassas. For this, we are working with the community and they (Muslims) are also helping the government.'
State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant has told that, on January 17, 2023, it was said that discussions are going on to improve madrasas in the state. He has said that 'There was also discussion on bringing further reforms in madrassas, setting rules and making boards. We also discussed the merger of small madrassas into big madrassas.' He said that about 100 small madrassas have been merged with big madrassas. Earlier, CM Sarma had said a few days ago that Maulanas who came from outside the state to teach in Madrasas of the state may be asked to appear at the nearest police station from time to time. He had said that there are about 3000 registered and unregistered madrassas in Assam.
Let us tell you that the Assam government is strict about illegal madrassas and maulanas in the state and is continuously taking action against them. Muslim leaders had expressed objection on many decisions of CM Sarma. Many madrasas have been demolished in the past. AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi attacked the Sarma government of Assam regarding this. At that time CM Sarma had said that if anti-national activities took place in Madrasas, they would be demolished.
