The Maharashtra government announced on Saturday that the value added tax (VAT) on compressed natural gas (CNG) will be reduced from 13.5 percent to 3 percent. On account of lower VAT, consumers will pay less for CNG. The new tariffs will be implemented on April 1st.

Earlier this month, Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar recommended lowering the VAT on natural gas from 13.5 percent to 3 percent during the Budget session. According to him, the tax cut will cost the state Rs 800 crore each year. Natural gas is "environmentally friendly," and is widely utilised for home piped gas delivery, as well as CNG-powered motor vehicles, auto-rickshaws, taxis, and private automobiles, Pawar said. In a tweet, Pawar noted that on Saturday in Marathi that the notification to lower VAT on CNG, as previously announced, has been released.

Autorickshaws, taxi drivers, passenger cars, and people will profit from the lower CNG rates, he said, adding that the move is also crucial for pollution control. The new prices will take effect on April 1, 2022, Pawar said.
