BENGALURU: From the following academic year, the Karnataka government plans to include Hindu epic stories such as the "Bhagavad Gita" and "Mahabharat" in its school curriculum.

Despite the fact that a proposal in this regard had been made some time ago, the ruling BJP administration had put it on hold due to opposition.

Education Minister B.C. Nagesh cleared the air on Tuesday, saying: "Moral education will be included in the school curriculum beginning next year. Moral instruction would also include the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharat, and Panchatantra Stories "he said.

"Moral education would incorporate whichever philosophies help students develop greater values. It will not be limited to a single religion. Aspects of numerous religious scriptures that are advantageous to children would be adopted. However, parts of a religion practised by 90% of youngsters would receive more attention, and this is unavoidable "He went on to clarify.

Minister Nagesh further stated that the moniker 'Mysuru Huli' (Lion of Mysuru) of Tipu Sultan, the erstwhile monarch of Mysuru Kingdom, will be retained in textbooks. Appachu Ranjan, a BJP MLA, has urged that the Tipu Sultan lesson be removed from school textbooks. He stated that he had produced proof to support his assertion.
