Mahadev is considered the God of Gods. Every Shiva Temple has a massive significance in Hinduism. However, the importance of Jyotirlinga has a another level. It is said that one should visit 12 Jyotirlinga at least once in their life span. Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is among this 12 Jyotirlinga. It is very important for Shiva Bhakta to at least visit this temple once. The temple is located on the banks of the holy Ganges, in Varanasi. It is regarded as among the holiest of the Hindu cities.
The Kashi Vishwanath temple is widely recognized as one of the most important places of worship in the Hindu religion. Inside the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the Jyotirlinga of Shiva, Vishveshvara or Vishvanath. According to Shivpuran when the whole world is destroyed in doomsday, the city of Kashi remains at its place even at that time. It is said that Mahadev holds this city on his trishul when the holocaust comes and takes it down when the time of creation comes. It means that Mahadev himself protects this city.
According to the religious scriptures a person who sacrifices his life in Kashi gets freedom from the bondage of birth and death. It is said in Puranas about Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga that even after the marriage of Mahadev and Mata Parvati, Mata Parvati stays at her father's house. Once she asked her husband Mahadev to take her with him. After this, Mahadev brought Mata Parvati to this holy city of Kashe. Therefore they stayed there in the form of was Vishwanath-Jyotirlinga. According to the belief all the sins of a person are destroyed just by seeing this Jyotirlinga. Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore had built five pavilions on it. Later, in 1853, King Ranjit Singh of Punjab got the shikhara of the temple gilded with 22 tonnes of gold.
