Mumbai: The Maharashtra cabinet has approved the power legislation in the state a few days ago. In such a situation, the Shakti Act is going to be introduced in the winter session of the Vidhan Sabha. After the passage in both houses of the Legislature, there is a plan to send this bill to the Central Government. This law will be implemented in the state as soon as it is approved by the Center. Also, under this bill, there is a provision of tougher punishment on sexual offences against women and children.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has a winter session on 14 and 15 December and it is during this time that the bill is to be introduced in the Legislature. At present, many activists, lawyers, social and women's organizations are opposing it after the Cabinet approved the bill. Let us tell you that these organizations say that this is a wrong law and they are anti-women. In fact, the Shakti Law Act will provide for stringent punishment and speedy trial of the death penalty, life imprisonment and heavy fines for sex offenders.
In order to implement this law in the state, the draft bill proposes to amend the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, CRPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Last Wednesday, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh approved the draft of the bill by the Cabinet in a meeting and it is scheduled to be tabled in the state assembly during the winter session today.
