Some of the mutations of Sars-Cov-2 that have caused global concern in India have originated in India, according to officials who have seen changes to E484K and N440K in samples taken from some people in Maharashtra and Kerala. On the other hand, health experts said that there is no direct correlation between mutations and spikes in covid cases in both states. In view of the sudden spike in Covid-19 case in the state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation of Covid-19 in the country. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and officials of 2 ministries were also present in the meeting. No direct connection between Covid-19 case and mutation

Dr Balaram Bhargava, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said, “There is no direct link between the recent surge in corona cases in Maharashtra and some other states and the recent mutations N440K and E484K". According to the information shared by the Union Health Ministry, out of 83 patients who lost their lives due to Covid in the last 24 hours, 35 are in Maharashtra, 15 in Kerala, 15 in Punjab, 5 in Chhattisgarh and 4 in Madhya Pradesh. So far 51,788 in Maharashtra, 12,460 in Tamil Nadu, 12,294 in Karnataka, 10,900 in Delhi, 10,249 in West Bengal, 8,715 in Uttar Pradesh and 7,167 in Andhra Pradesh have died due to corona infection.

In the past week (15-21 February) in India, 1,00,990 fresh cases of Corona were recorded. More than 1 lakh cases were registered in a week after five weeks. Last week, 77,284 new cases of Covid were reported, which increased by 31% as compared to the previous week. Talking about the states, the highest number of Covid cases was increased in Maharashtra, where this week saw an increase of 81%. On the other hand, the average corona case figure in India last week was 11,430 which increased to 12,770 after this week's figures. However, there has been a stagnation in the number of deaths on weekly basis.
