Maharashtra Congress MLA Amin Patel demanded a change of name for famous film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming film 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' and claimed that it would tarnish the image of Kathiawar districts. Alia Bhatt is playing the role of Gangubai in the film. Gangubai was one of the most powerful and respected 'madams' of Kamathipura in Mumbai's red-light area during the 1960s. Addressing the assembly, Patel said that the Kamathipura region has changed a lot. Patel is an MLA from the Mumbadevi assembly constituency in South Mumbai.
The legislator further said, 'It is not on the side as it was in the 1950s. There, women are moving forward in different professions. He said, 'The name of this movie will also spoil the image of Kathiawar districts. The name of the film should be changed. The Congress MLA who joined the Shiv Sena-led government of Maharashtra has appealed to the state government to intervene in the case. Persons living in Kamathipura in Mumbai have claimed that the facts stated in Bhansali's movie are not true and only a conspiracy to defame their society.'
An organization working there by the name of Kamathipuri has started speaking against the film. He said, 'The people here have been working very hard to improve the history related to Kamathipura, but this film will spoil the present, but it will not affect the future generations properly.' It is being told that the creator of Gangubai Kathiawadi is distorting the 200-year-old history of Kamathipura.
