Mumbai: The issue of reservation in Maharashtra is once again in the news. The BJP has been constantly pressurizing the Uddhav government in the state over the demand for the Maratha reservation. In the same vein, BJP leader and former CM Devendra Fadnavis, who was protesting in Nagpur today demanding OBC reservation, has been taken into custody by the police. Hundreds of activists along with Fadnavis have been taken into custody by the police.

The apex court had given a major verdict on the Maratha reservation. Supreme Court terms Maratha's reservation in the education and job sector as unconstitutional. The apex court said the Maratha community cannot be declared socially, educationally backward for quota. This 2018 Maharashtra State Law is a violation of the right to equality. The court said that we will not review the 1992 verdict again. The apex court said Maratha reservation is a violation of the 50 percent limit.

With the reservation given to various communities and economically weaker sections, the reservation limit in Maharashtra has reached about 75 percent.  After the State Reservation Act of 2001, the total number of reservations in the State was 52 percent. With a 12-13 percent Maratha quota, the total reservation in the state went up to 64-65 percent. On the other hand, a 10 percent quota for economically weaker sections (EWS) announced by the Centre in 2019 is also applicable in the state. All this has gone up to 75 percent of the reservation.
