The government of Maharashtra on Monday announced a change in the Bakri Eid holiday from June 28th to June 29th due to demand by congress leaders Arif Naseem Khan and Mudassar Patel.

In view of the sighting of the new moon, the Congress leaders wrote to CM Eknath Shinde, urging him to change the holiday date for Bakrid in 2023. Specifically, they emphasized that the first day of Bakrid is on June 29th. Consequently, they requested the CM to issue a fresh GR and make the necessary changes.

On the same date, June 29th, Maharashtra also observes Ashadi Ekadashi, a significant Hindu festival. However, it is not recognized as a public holiday.

Every year, the state government prepares a list of holidays, but the dates of Muslim festivals and celebrations sometimes fluctuate due to the sighting of the new moon.

Bakrid, also known as Eid-ul-Adha, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismaeel, as an act of obedience to God's command. It signifies obedience and submission to Allah. Muslims observe this three-day festival, beginning on June 29th, by offering two-unit namaz and sacrificing goats and sheep as a symbolic act of devotion.

Maharashtra, a state in India, observes Ashadi Ekadashi, which is a significant Hindu festival. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by the people of Maharashtra. Ashadi Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the Hindu month of Ashadha (June-July) and marks the beginning of the holy period known as "Chaturmas."

During this festival, devotees of Lord Vitthal and Rukmini, also known as Lord Vithoba and Goddess Rakhumai, gather at the famous Pandharpur temple in Maharashtra. They undertake a pilgrimage known as "Wari" to Pandharpur, chanting devotional songs and carrying palanquins with the images of Lord Vitthal and Rukmini.
