Mahashivratri also refers to the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance called Tandava. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar but most festival dates are specified using the lunar portion of the calendar. We all are excited for Mahashivratri. This year Mahashivaratri will fell on 18 February 2023. On this day Shiva devotees offer prayers with full devotion and observe fast.  The festival of Mahashivaratri celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Shakti.

According to Shivpuran, Mahadev and Mata Parvati got married on the day of Mahashivaratri. According to the scriptures, it creation started from the day of Mahashivaratri. Description of Shivratri is found in Garuda Purana, Skanda Purana, Padmapurana and Agnipurana etc. As Mahashivaratri enjoys a massive significance in Hinduism. On day of Mahashivaratri devotees observe fast and they offers prayers to Shiva. Here are some common mistake which we need to avoid on Mahashivaratri.

*Do not eat the Prasad offered by yourself on Mahashivratri as it will result in Poverty.

* Do not offer Broken Akshat to Shivling.

* Do not offer broken belpatra to the shivling. As per the ritual it is better if you write Ram on the beltpatra with sandalwood and then offer it.

* Don't offer Roli on Shivling, sandalwood should be used instead of Roli.

* Ketaki and Champa flowers should not be offered on Shivling during the worship of Mahadev (it is believed that both these flowers were cursed by Mahadev).

* Shiv Abhishek should be done with water in the morning,  with curd and milk in the day and ghee in the evening and honey at night. As per the popular belief fame and glory is achieved by doing this.

*  Plum (Ber) should be offered on Shivling

* Do not wear black clothes on Mahashivratri, wearing white, red or pink clothes considered good during Mahashivratri.
