With the introduction of upgraded models like the Thar, Bolero Neo, XUV700, and Scorpio-N, demand for Mahindra & Mahindra's numerous highly popular SUV vehicles has grown in the Indian market. The XUV400 electric vehicle (EV), which the Indian automaker promises to invest heavily in, is currently the focus of all attention. The strategy makes sense because Mahindra anticipates an increase in EV demand in the near future, driven mostly by consumers of SUVs.

Mahindra is seeking to combine the desire for SUV body types with the trend of becoming electric, even if many see compact and reasonably priced EVs as the way forward for an electric future for mobility in India. “Our internal research tells us that 25 per cent of the existing SUV buyers would like to consider an electric SUV as their next purchase," Rajesh Jejurikar told news agency PTI. “The research also tells us that over the next 2-3 years we will see this kind of transition happening."

Because owners of models in this sector often already own at least one other vehicle, Jejurikar thinks electric SUVs would lead the way in a more dominant way. He continues by saying that as a result, range-related problems and the availability of charging infrastructure would be less of an issue for such customers than for those who are considering their first car, which is often a tiny electric hatchback.

Mahindra XUV400 is therefore anticipated to establish the company's foundation in the field of electric mobility, which is still in its infancy in India, at least with regard to passenger vehicles (PVs). According to Jejurikar, Mahindra anticipates that in the future, battery-powered SUVs would account for about 25% of its entire SUV sales.

But the XUV400 doesn't bear exclusive responsibility for increasing sales of electric SUVs. Mahindra recently showcased five electric SUVs, with most of them set to be on sale between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2026. These vehicles would be released under the XUV and BE names.
