Lucknow: The Prayagraj administration has taken significant action against Jamia Habibia Madrasa, sealing the institution and initiating demolition proceedings due to illegal activities. The madrasa, located in Atarsuiya, Prayagraj, was found to have made unauthorized constructions on 2,700 square feet of land, and it is not registered with the Uttar Pradesh government.

The madrasa, which has been in operation for 84 years, was implicated in several serious allegations, including the printing of fake currency, funding for terrorist activities, and receiving illegal foreign money. These issues came to light following the discovery of a fake currency operation within the madrasa on August 28. The acting principal, Maulvi Mohammad Tafsirul Arifin, was arrested in connection with the fake currency factory. Additionally, inflammatory books and speed post slips were found in the principal’s room, prompting further investigation by intelligence agencies.

The Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) sealed the madrasa on September 4, 2024, for operating without proper permissions and violating construction regulations. The authority has warned that any attempt to break the seal or continue operations will be considered illegal and punishable. Approximately 100 students were enrolled, with 70 sent home after the sealing.

The issue surrounding Jamia Habibia Madrasa has highlighted broader concerns, as investigations revealed that 72 out of 267 madrasas in Prayagraj are operating without official recognition. The Minority Department has forwarded this information to the government, and action against these unrecognized madrasas is expected to follow.

The madrasa reportedly received substantial funding from various Islamic countries, including Turkey, Dubai, and other Arab nations. Investigations are ongoing to track the flow of funds and connections to fundamentalist groups. The authorities are also scrutinizing accounts linked to these foreign transactions and the madrasa's involvement in radical education.
