Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called on ULFA(I) leader Paresh Barua to refrain from actions that could undermine the future of Assam's youth. Speaking at 'The Assam Tribune's Dialogue 2024' on Saturday, Sarma expressed deep concern over the recent planting of explosives across the state, which he believes could hinder the ongoing growth and development of Assam.
Sarma highlighted that Assam is on track to become a significant economic force in the next decade if it remains peaceful and if the youth continue to show enthusiasm and cooperation. "I urge the ULFA(I) chief to avoid activities that will jeopardize the future of the state's youth," Sarma said.
The police recently discovered "bomb-like substances" at eight locations, including two in Guwahati, following ULFA(I)’s claim of planting bombs in 24 locations across Assam on Independence Day. Sarma emphasized that while conflict and differing ideas are natural in a democracy, they should not lead to terrorism or instability. "We must first ensure the security of our motherland before finding solutions to any issues," he stated.
Sarma also addressed concerns about recent anti-non-Assamese sentiments and the negative impact on the state’s image. He encouraged Assamese youth residing outside the state and warned against creating an environment that could deter potential investors. "Our prosperity should include everyone, and we must support our culture and language without compromising our welcoming stance," he added.
The Chief Minister highlighted Assam's transformation from a state known for agitation and insurgency to one recognized for its rapid growth and investment opportunities. He stressed the importance of shifting from job seekers to job creators, with major industrial investments from companies like Tata, Reliance, and Adani setting the stage for significant development.
Union DONER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, addressing the dialogue virtually, emphasized the North East region’s pivotal role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). Scindia noted an investment of ₹81,000 crore in the region, marking a new era of peace and prosperity, and highlighted the North East as a key gateway for trade and connectivity with South East Asia.
