SIKKIM: A major landslide has caused significant damage to the Teesta-V hydropower station in Sikkim. The power station, operated by NHPC Limited, had been under restoration following a glacial outburst in October of last year that had already inflicted considerable damage.

NHPC Limited reported that several structures at the plant were impacted by the landslide. The Teesta Basin region, already prone to natural subsidence and landslides during the monsoon season, was particularly affected this time, resulting in the landslide that damaged critical components of the hydropower station.

The landslide struck the Teesta-V Power Station on August 20, affecting the Tail Race Tunnel (TRT) outlet structure and part of the GIS building. The power station, which was undergoing repairs due to previous flood damage, is currently non-operational.

Additionally, the landslide caused substantial damage to the powerhouse of the Teesta-V hydroelectric project. The incident also affected 17-18 houses, leading to the evacuation of six families who were moved to a relief camp set up at the NHPC Guest House in Balutar.

The landslide has also disrupted access to the Singtam-Dikchu Road. Local authorities, including the District Collector, have urged immediate road restoration efforts, and the Department of Mines and Geology has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the landslide's causes.
