Maldives Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem was assaulted on January 31 in Male, the capital city. He was attacked by an unknown person who hit him with a hammer while Shameem was on his way to work in the morning.

Shameem sustained an injury to his left arm and was promptly taken to ADK hospital for medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that his condition is stable.

The police, who are actively investigating the assault, stated that the attack was not carried out with a sharp object. There are suspicions of potential connections between the assault and Shameem's previous legal actions against criminals.

Appointed in December 2019, Shameem has had a significant tenure as the top prosecutor. Just three days prior to the attack, the Maldivian Parliament rejected the appointment of three cabinet posts, including that of the attorney general.

Hussain Shameem was appointed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government during the presidency of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Solih has been vocal against anti-India sentiments in the country, which has been led by President Mohamed Muizzu since his recent election. In 2023, Solih deemed the Opposition's 'India Out' campaign a national security risk.

Prior to the attack on Shameem, the Maldivian Parliament experienced unrest as members from the ruling party and the main Opposition clashed over Cabinet appointments and the role of the attorney general. The disagreements led to physical confrontations, resulting in injuries to several legislators and a temporary halt to parliamentary proceedings.
