New Delhi: The term of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, ends on February 15, for which he has also been given a farewell in Parliament. In place of Ghulam Nabi Azad in the Rajya Sabha, the Congress has decided to make its veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge the Leader of the Opposition in the House. For this, the Congress has also informed Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu to make Mallikarjun Kharge the Rajya Sabha leader.
It is noteworthy that Mallikarjun Kharge lost the Lok Sabha elections of 2019, after which he was brought to the Rajya Sabha last year as a member. Mallikarjun Kharge, who was the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the previous Lok Sabha, has now decided to make the Leader of the Opposition in the House as an alternative to Ghulam Nabi Azad in the Upper House. In the first term of the Modi government, he has been the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha between 2014 and 2019 and has been the voice of the party on many issues.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, from former PM Indira Gandhi to Sonia Gandhi, has experience of working with four Gandhi family members. He came from Jammu and Kashmir by electing Rajya Sabha in the year 2015, whose term is being completed on 15 February. Since the formation of the Union Territory, there have been no assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, due to which the Rajya Sabha seats will remain vacant. This is the reason that after the completion of Ghulam Nabi Azad's Rajya Sabha term, the Congress has chosen Mallikarjun Kharge as the Leader of the House.
