Mamata Banerjee,  Indian politician, legislator, and bureaucrat who served as the first female chief minister of West Bengal is celebrating her 68th birthday today, January 5, 2023.

ON this oocassion, Let us have a  Look at the political profile of Mamata Banerjee:

Mamata Banerjee after her victory in West Bengal elections rides high on people-savvy policies, regional alliances and her dream to come at the Centre.

In the 1984 general elections, Mamata Banerjee was elected to Lok Sabha as one of the youngest parliamentarians, beating veteran CPI leader Somnath Chatterjee from the Jadavpur seat in South Kolkata.

She started her political career with the Congress (I) in the early 1970s and became the General Secretary of state Mahila Congress (I) from 1976 to 1980. She became the general secretary of the All India Youth Congress after her success in 1984.

Mamata Banerjee lost  returned to Lok Sabha in 1991 by shifting to Kolkata South constituency After her 1991 win, Ms.Banerjee  was made the Union Minister of State for HRD, Youth Affairs and Sports, and Women & Child Development.

In 1991, Banerjee fractured her head in an attack by a CPI-M goon Lalu Alam. The incident took place at Hazra crossing in southern part of Kolkata when Banerjee was leading a Congress rally.

Mamata Banerjee worked with 3 Prime Ministers including PV Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr Manmohan Singh. She had been a Union minister in both National Democratic Alliance  and United Progressive Alliance governments and held portfolios like Human Resource Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, Women and Child Development, Coal and Mines and the Railways.
