New Delhi: After PM Narendra Modi's recent statement on rising prices of petrol and diesel, the controversy has intensified. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit back at PM Modi, saying her government (Bengal government) has spent Rs 1,500 crore in the last three years to keep petrol and diesel prices under control.

In fact, PM Modi had a meeting with the chief ministers of states regarding Corona. During this time, PM Modi had appealed to opposition states like Maharashtra, Kerala and West Bengal to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel so that the people can get some relief from inflation.  The facts shared by them are wrong. We have been giving subsidies on petrol and diesel for the last three years. For this, we have spent Rs.1500 crores in the last three years.

Mamata Banerjee further said that PM Modi is asking the states to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel. We owe rs 97,000 crore to the Centre. If the government pays even half of it, we will reduce vat. "As soon as the government clears the dues, we will start giving a subsidy of Rs 3,000 crore on petrol and diesel. I have no problem in giving subsidies, but how will I run my government? "We promise that, if the government pays our dues, we will remove all taxes on petrol and diesel for the next five years.''
