A shocking scene unfolded in the family court inside Madras High Court premises on Tuesday. A man stabbed his wife inside a family courtroom during the hearing for a divorce case between the couple - Varalakshmi and Saravanan - from Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram district. According to police, the couple had a matrimonial dispute case pending before first Additional Family Court located in the ground floor of the building which also houses a dozen other courts. The incident took place in the afternoon and in front of the principal family court judge. Saravanan, who is a bus driver by profession, had carried a knife into the court premises. It is unclear at this point how the weapon went undetected. He used it to attack his wife during the hearing of their divorce case which has been ongoing since 2009.

Saravanan and his wife had a wordy quarrel on the corridor. Suddenly, the accused whipped out a knife and attacked his wife. Immediately, lawyers and others caught and thrashed him. Varalakshmi fell to the ground after the attack and the judge quickly summoned the police. They moved quickly to mobilize the ambulance that was parked within the Madras High Court premises and rushed her to the Stanley Medical College. Accuse was subsequently handed over to the High Court police. The crime was committed in front of the judges in the open court which was jam-packed in the busy hours.
