LUCKNOW: A man has been arrested by customs investigators at the airport when he arrived with pure gold worth Rs 20.6 lakh hidden in his rectum.

The passenger had boarded IndiGo 6E 1088 flight from Dubai, landing in Lucknow three-and-a-half hours later.

Officials from customs said that "The gold was packaged in two packets like a paste and was covered in black tape. The packs weighed a total of 433 grammes. Gold weighs 397 grammes once the tape and other impurities have been removed."

A customs official stated, "When the traveller waited in line to pass through immigration, he was walking oddly. He did not fit the description of a traveller who was just taking a tour of Dubai. The metal detector gave rise to even more concern. He was taken out of the line and questioned." Two sachets of pure gold paste were found by the team inside. The accused traveller had tucked the packet away in his pubis.

The official remarked, "It is amazing that he travelled for more than three hours in such a way. The passenger was detained after being pulled over and brought before the chief judicial magistrate (economic offences) for court custody.

Further investigation is under process. The smuggled gold was supposed to be taken to the National Capital Region.
