The 73rd Independence Day is to be celebrated across the country on 15th August. However, you will be surprised to know that the annual festival of freedom was celebrated on Wednesday 31st July at the famous Pashupatinath temple in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh.
In fact, the Independence Day is celebrated on the basis of the Hindu Calendar in the ancient temple on the banks of the river Shivana in Mandsaur, about 250 km from Indore, and this unique tradition has been going on for more than three decades.
Umesh Joshi, president of the Jyotisha and Karmak and Ritual Council, the founder of the Purohits and Yazmans of the Pashupatinath Temple, has told PTI that on August 15, 1947, when the country was liberated from the British Raj, according to the Hindu calendar, the Krishna side of the Shravan month was a chaturdash. Therefore, the Temple of Lord Shiva celebrates Independence Day every year on the same date, by performing special pujas. This time the date (Shravan Krishna Chaturdashi) took place today (Wednesday). According to the Hindu calendar, the Independence Day was celebrated in the Pashupatinath Temple. Joshi further said that on the Independence Day, Lord Shiva was specially worshipped and during this period the Octafaced Shivling was anointed with the water of Durva (a special grass used in the puja) and prayed for the happiness of all by shouting patriotic slogans.
