Mangal Pandey's name is the foremost whenever there is talk of 'Indian freedom struggle'. The same name started to drive the British out of India. The rebellion of the freedom struggle of 1857 started because of this name. Along with this, Mangal Pandey also gave the slogan 'Maro Firangi ko'. This slogan of Mangal Pandey caught great vigor and the war of independence broke out against the British from here. This further added to the burning fire of revolution in the hearts of the slave people and soldiers.

Mangal Pandey was such a freedom fighter, from whom the British rule also trembled. He was born on July 19 in the year 1827 in Nagwa village of Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. By starting a rebellion against the British, they has shaken the British rule.

The British government chose the day of April 8, 1857 to hang Mangal Pandey. However, the executioners of Barrackpore refused to hang Mangal Pandey. He flatly refused to hang the true son of Mother Bharati on the gallows. Later four executioners were called from Calcutta (Kolkata) and as the sun rose on 8 April 1857, the news of Mangal Pandey's sacrifice was shared with the whole world.  Honoring the martyr of Mangal Pandey, the Government of India later built a garden in Barrackpore at the same place in the name of Martyr Mangal Pandey Mahaudyan.
