On Friday, a state independent MLA Ashab Uddin joined the Janata Dal (United) with less than a month is there for the Assembly elections in Manipur.
Before joining the JD, Ashab Uddin, an independent MLA from Manipur's Jiribam seat, offered his resignation to Speaker Y. Khemchand Singh on Thursday (U). Ashab Uddin said he joined the party so he could work for the people of Manipur in general and Jiribam in particular without being hindered, something he couldn't do as an independent MLA.
Ashab Uddin was reported in Indian Express as stating, "I feel that under the dynamic leadership of JD(U) president Lalan Singh and Nitish Kumar, I would be able to bring a major change in Manipur and Jiribam." Cachar district in south Assam is bordered by the Jiribam constituency.
Ashab Uddin was one of two MLAs who backed the BJP following the 2017 Assembly elections, claiming the right to form the government in Manipur. Kh Joykishan Singh, a suspended Congress MLA, joined the JD (U) in Imphal earlier on Wednesday. Joykishan is a sitting Congress MLA from Manipur's Imphal West district's Thangmeiband assembly seat.
Joykishan was suspended from the party on January 18 "on the suggestion of the MPCC's Disciplinary Action Committee."Manipur will hold elections for 60 assembly seats on February 27 and March 3.
