Independent MLA from Manipur Ashab Uddin resigns

Imphal: Manipur is among the five states going to assembly polls, including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. There is also political turmoil in Manipur and now that less than a month is left for the assembly elections, an independent MLA, Mohammad Ashab Uddin, resigned from the membership of the Manipur Assembly on Friday.

In an official statement issued in Imphal on Friday, Assembly Secretary K Meghjit Singh said, "Mla Mohammad Ashab Uddin, who was elected from Jiribam assembly constituency, has resigned from his membership from Manipur Assembly." He said that after the resignation of MLA Mohammad Ashab, the Jiribam assembly seat has now fallen vacant with effect from Friday (January 28, 2022).

With the resignation of Mohammad Ashab Uddin, a total of eight assembly seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly are now vacant. According to media reports, he could not be contacted for his comments after the MLA resigned. However, according to a report in the local newspaper Sangai Express, MLA Ashab Uddin has joined the Janata Dal-United.
