Manipur Violence:  Reportedly, in Manipur, victims of a troubling video case have taken their grievances to the Supreme Court, filing petitions against both the central and state governments. The incident involved two women from the Kuki community, who were subjected to the deplorable act of being stripped naked and paraded by a mob of Meitei men. This appalling event, which came to light through a video on May 4th, caused significant tension in violence-stricken Manipur.

Taking cognizance of the Manipur violence case on July 20, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, had to address several cases related to ethnic violence in the northeastern state on July 28. However, due to the Chief Justice's ill health, the matter had to be deferred.

CJI DY Chandrachud denounced the incident, branding it as the ‘grossest of constitutional abuse’. The seriousness of the matter prompted the central government to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), demonstrating their commitment to "zero-tolerance towards any crimes against women," as stated in the affidavit filed by Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla.

In an effort to ensure a fair trial, the central government has requested the Supreme Court to move the trial of the Manipur violence case outside the state. Additionally, the government sought the top court's order for the expeditious completion of the entire case concerning violence in Manipur, including the gang-rape case, within a period of six months.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the Centre's plea regarding the transfer of the Manipur viral video case today, the nation awaits a decisive course of action. The court has urged both the state and central governments to take immediate and effective steps to address this grave issue.
