New Delhi: Most social media platforms have started following the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021. Twitter alone has not sent full information to the ministry on the guidelines issued by the government. Other social media platforms have shared information about the necessary appointments as per rules.
According to ministry sources, following the new rules of the IT Act, most of the major social media companies have shared information about their Chief Compliance Officer (Chief Compliance Officer), Nodal Liaison Person (Nodal Contact Person) and Complaints Officer (Grievance Officer) with the Ministry of Electronics and IT in India. According to the new rules, the designated officers in these important social media companies should be employees of the company and residents of India. Most of these social media platforms include Koo, ShareChat, Telegram, Linkedin, Google, Facebook, WhatsApp and others. Twitter has shared the information of a lawyer working in its own firm late at night after the government's reprimand, which will serve as their nodal contact person and complaints officer in India. But he has not sent any information to the Ministry so far with his compliance officer.
The Government of India had earlier slammed the company for not following the new rules of the IT Act by Twitter. Expressing concern over freedom of expression in a statement issued by Twitter, the government had told the company that it is the responsibility of the Government of India to protect freedom of expression in India and not to any privately beneficial, foreign institution like Twitter.
