Market closing: Market erases gains to end flat; Power, IT stocks gain

New Delhi: On Thursday, Indian equity indices ended the day in the green, but off their early highs. After a strong start to the day, the domestic indices gave up most of their gains in late trading, driven down by banking, consumer goods, and pharmaceutical sectors.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 33 points, or 0.06 percent, to 55,702, while the wider NSE Nifty rose 5 points, or 0.03 percent, to 16,683. The Sensex fluctuated in a 953-point range before settling slightly higher. Both indices, on the other hand, ended their three-day losing streak.Mid- and small-cap stocks ended mixed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index rising 0.10 percent and the small-cap index falling 0.75 percent.

Five of the NSE's 15 sector gauges ended the day in the green. Nifty IT, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Auto sub-indices all underperformed the index, sliding 2.07%, 0.62 percent, and 0.42 percent, respectively. The index was underperformed by Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty FMCG, and Nifty Pharma.

On the Nifty,  Tech Mahindra was the highest gainer, jumping 4.22 percent to Rs 1,264. Among the gainers were Hero MotoCorp, Infosys, HCL Tech, and Tata Steel. On BSE, TechMahinda, Infy, HCL Tech, Wipro, Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS, and ITC were among the top gainers.  On the other hand, IndusInd Bank, Nestle India, UltraTech Cement, Sun Pharma, Reliance Industries, PowerGrid, Bajaj Finserv, Titan, and Asian Paints, on all ended the day in the red.
