New Delhi: In a turbulent trading session, Indian equities indexes climbed on Thursday, reversing a three-day decline with banking and metal companies leading the way.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 503 points, or 0.94 percent, to 54,253, while the NSE Nifty gained 144 points, or 0.90 percent, to 16,170. During today's session, the Sensex moved in a 921-point range. 

Mid- and small-cap stocks ended the day on a positive note, with the Nifty Midcap 100 up 1.35 percent and small-cap up 0.77 percent.  The NSE's 14 out of 15 sector gauges ended the day in the green. The Nifty Bank and Nifty Metal sub-indices both exceeded the platform, climbing 2.20 percent and 2.67 percent, respectively.

The highest Nifty gainer was Tata Steel, which rose 5.08 percent to Rs. 1,049.90. Among the gainers were Apollo Hospitals, JSW Steel, SBI, and HDFC Bank.

Tata Steel, SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Nestle India, HDFC, Wipro, TCS, Tech Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, and Titan were among the top gainers on the 30-share BSE index.
