Market Closing: Sensex, Nifty close at record highs,  Banking stocks lead

India’s stock benchmarks closed higher for the second straight session, helped by gains in index heavyweights Reliance and HDFC Bank Bajaj Fiance among others.

At close, the BSE Sensex rose 403 and closed at a record 55,959. The 30-stock index rose to 56,023.22 in intra-day trade. The NSE Nifty 50 advanced to 128 points16,625, a record close for the 50-stock index. HDFC Bank Ltd. contributed the most to the index gain, increasing 2.3 percent. Bajaj Finserv Ltd. had the largest increase, rising 7.8 percent.

Buying was seen across sectors as 16 of 19 sector gauges compiled by the BSE ended higher led by the BSE metal index's nearly 3 percent gain. Energy, Banking, Financial Services, Capital Goods, Healthcare Industrial, Oil & Gas and Power indices also gained upto 2 percent.

Bajaj Finserv was the top Nifty gainer, the stock rose nearly 8 percent to hit a record high of Rs 16,460 after the company received in-principle approval from Sebi for sponsoring a Mutual Fund. Hindalco, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, Tech Mahindra, Indian Oil, HDFC Bank, SBI Life, Cipla and State Bank of India also were among the major gainers. On the downside, Nestle India, Britannia Industries, Asian Paints, HDFC, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Hindustan Unilever were among the losers.
